Abstract:

Title:
The role of nurses in thrombolytic treatment of stroke
Abstract:
Background: Stroke is still a major health care issue due to high prevalence of cerebrovascular diseases and disability related large socio-economic burden for the patient, his family and society. Ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot can be very effectively treated by clot lysis i.e. thrombolysis. Thrombolysis within four and a half hours is an established, effective and causal treatment for ischemic stroke. Nurse plays an important and diverse role in stroke thrombolysis. She offers professional assistance from the diagnostic procedures on, gives emotional support and encouragement during treatment. Nurse is an indispensable member of the stroke team. Methods: We have used a questionnaire with eleven open type questions in one patient with stroke treated at the neurology department at university medical center. Results: We have found nursing care issues before thrombolytic treatment. Those were resolved with successful thrombolytic treatment. Following nursing issues were found: irregular breathing patterns, impaired self-care, reduced ability for personal hygiene, difficulty in swallowing with the risk of an aspiration, uncontrolled urinary and bowel functions, obstipation, impaired verbal communication and risk of falling. The disability of the patient was significantly reduced after thrombolysis. Conclusions: In stroke thrombolysis early arrival to the qualified center is essential. A nurse with overview of the nursing issues in stroke patients is an important member of the stroke team. Typical nursing care issues should be recognized, evaluated, followed and managed to reduce their impact on the patient.
