Abstract:

Title:
ADULT AWARENESS OF CELIAC DISEASE
Abstract:
Celiac disease is a chronic disease of the small intestine, accompanied by several non-intestinal symptoms and associated diseases. Knowing the disease is the key feature to early diagnosis. Early detection is crucial for further treatment, as this prevents the occurrence of diseases that are associated to celiac disease. The only treatment, up to now, is a strict lifetime gluten-free diet. The purpose of this study was to investigate people’s general awareness about celiac disease. Research methodology: The study was based on a quantitative survey methodology. We used 100 questionnaires, partially of open type. The analysis was shown with the help of graphs. The survey was conducted among 92 a randomly selected patients who were present at the time of the research in general medicine clinics health center. Research results: The results demonstrated that still more than half (68%) of respondents do not know the celiac disease or have never even heard of it. The respondents who have heard of it know it quite well. Conclusion: We find that the knowledge of people about celiac disease is still not good enough. Lectures on the subject would be useful, as well as leaflets on celiac disease could be left in waiting rooms of health centres. In this way, patients could access the information easier and maybe they would even upgrade their knowledge
