Abstract:

Title:
NITRATE REMOVAL FROM DRINKING WATER USING FIBRES
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to examine the efficiency of activated carbon fibres for the removal of nitrates from drinking water. We used Zorflex® ACC fibres made of 100 % activated carbon. Two types of fibres were available, e.g. woven and knitted fibres. We examined the efficiency of both types of fibres and compared them. We modified the fibres with different chemicals, to improve the efficiency. We checked whether one fibre can be used multiple times. We changed the temperature to find if temperature affects the adsorption of nitrates. We monitored the physical and chemical parameters of the fibres before, during and after the treatment. During the first part of the experiment model water was used and real water in the second part. Real water used was from the Maribor and Ptuj waterworks. The content of nitrates in drinking water was around 50 mg/L. The first part of the experiment proved that the most effective fibre was the one modified with H2SO4 (c = 4 mol/L) acid. 2.5 times more nitrates were adsorbed in comparison with the fibres modified with H2O2. On this way we removed up to 50 % of all nitrate ions from the model water, which means around 25 mg(NO3-) were adsorbed by the fibre. The most appropriate temperature was 25 °C. We didn't manage to achieve better results at higher temperatures. The adsorption of nitrate ions in drinking water is worse as in the model water. We assume that the adsorption of the nitrates is diminished by the presence of other anions in the water. We found that smaller amounts of nitrate ions can be removed with Zorflex® ACC fibres.
