Title:Hemp (Cannabis sativa L. ssp. sativa) in Slovenia and over the world
Abstract:The cultivation of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L. ssp. sativa) still has a negative connotation in Slovenia as well as in the rest of the world. This is due to the relation of this plant to cannabis indica (Cannabis sativa L. ssp. indica), which is used for drug purposes. This attitude is also reflected in the legislation of countries, some allow to cultivate industrial hemp and some not. The purpose of this paper is to present the utility and profitability of industrial hemp cultivation as well as to see how cannabis indica influences the cultivation of industrial hemp in Slovenia and in the rest of the world. My analysis includes Slovenia, its neighbouring countries and the countries important for industrial hemp production in Europe and in the rest of the world. The data acquired from various statistics represent the status in the year 2010. The biggest industrial hemp producing country in the world is China and Mexico is the largest cannabis indica supplier. The production technique of industrial hemp is environmentally friendly and appropriate for organic agriculture. Industrial hemp is useful in rope making, in paper and car industry as well as in construction; it is also used for food, cosmetic purposes and the health industry. The income per hectare of farmland varies between 1400 and 1700 euro per year, which is up to five times more than for corn. The increasing prevalence of drugs and the rising number of people addicted to hard drugs around the world suggests an indirect influence of cannabis indica on the production of industrial hemp all around the world.
