Abstract:

Title:
ELECTROCOAGULATION OF OIL-WATER EMULSIONS
Abstract:
Electrocoagulation is a method for waste water treatment using electrochemical cell. It has been tested as a potentially useful method in the past but has been superseded by conventional methods. In recent decades search for alternative waste water treatment went on, therefore a lot of research is dedicated to electrocoagulation which seems to be simple and cost effective method for wastewater treatment. The subject of this diploma thesis was to check the effectiveness of electrocoagulation of oil-water emulsions, and to determine optimal parameters for the process. It was found that the pH of the emulsion, distance between electrodes, and the electrical current applied have major impact on method's effectiveness. Chemical purity of electrodes has a big impact as well. The COD values of industrial emulsions at optimal conditions decreased in the range from 57 % to 69 %. Electrocoagulation is effective in treating oil-water emulsions but certain pretreatment is required.
