Title:COMPARISON OF LEARNING MOTIVATION OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN SLOVENIA AND PORTUGAL
Abstract:The thesis presents the topic of learning motivation, its grounds, different definitions, types, contents, influence on learning and some examples of motivation incentive. The main aim of the thesis is to compare learning motivation of children in two completely different countries, Slovenia and Portugal, and to determine the differences according to sex. The research was implemented on the sample of 400 pupils, 280 Slovenian and 120 Portuguese from classes 4 and 5. Motivation was researched by the questionnaire for primary school children Vprašalnik učne motivacije za učence osnovnih šol written by Mojca Juriševič, Ph.D. (2005). The results show differences between the pupils from both countries in general interest for learning and learning self-image, whereas differences according to sex were noticed only in interest in learning and school in general, since more girls are interested in school and learning than boys. The analysis of learning objectives also leads to important conclusions that the objective of knowledge acquisition is more common with girls than boys, whereas boys prefer the objective of avoiding learning. While Portuguese pupils exceed Slovenian in the objectives to avoid unsuccessfulness, making impression on others, and competitiveness, the objectives of reaching success and knowledge acquisition and the objective of avoiding learning are equally distributed between both groups. The reasons for success including aptitude, effort and fortune seem to be similar among pupils of both countries, yet differences are shown in statements related to unknown reasons for success. The number of Portuguese pupils who do not recognise the source of their success is higher than that of their Slovenian peers. While Portuguese pupils recognise their own incompetence as the source of their failure or they do not know the source, the Slovenian pupils believe that the lack of effort is usually the reason for their failure.
