Abstract:
Neodvisna napovedna dejavnika slabšega subjektivnega počutja sta bila povečana vlaga (regresijski koeficient – 0.14; 95% CI – 0.26 – 0.02; p=0.024) in hitre spremembe zračnega tlaka (regresijski koeficient – 8.72; 95% CI – 18.04 -0.60; p=0.067).

Title:
INFLUENCE OF WEATHER CONDITION ON PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Abstract:
Despite the fact that first reports on impact of climate factors on human well-being have been made by the father of medicine, Hippocrates, and that area continues to be interesting also nowadays, little is known about the influences of weather on multiple sclerosis. In the present study we therefore investigated possible impact of climate factors (air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, precipitation) on well–being of patients with multiple sclerosis and if such influence is dependent upon neurological impairment and presence of immunomodulatory treatment. Research methodology. We conducted prospective descriptive cohort study in patients with multiple sclerosis followed at the Center for multiple sclerosis in Ljubljana. A total of 310 patients, who gave written informed consent, were included. Multiple regression was used to identify climate factors independently influencing well-being of the patients. Results. Study revealed statistically significant influence of climate factors on subjective well-being of patients. Multiple regression revealed that increased humidity (regression coefficient - 0.14; 95% CI - 0.26 - 0.02; p=0.024) and rapid changes in barometric pressure (regression coefficient – 8.72; 95% CI - 18.04 - 0.60; p=0.067) were independent negative predictors of well-being. Post-hoc subgroup analysis revealed that influence of weather may be different according to the neurological impairment and presence of immunomodulatory therapy. Conclusion. Our study will help us to better understand worse subjective well-being of patients with multiple sclerosis during particular weather conditions. On the other hand, these findings may be useful also for patients to be aware that increased humidity and rapid changes in barometric pressure may worsen their subjective well-being.
