Title:Children and celiac disease
Abstract:Celiac disease is a disorder of the small intestine caused by permanent hypersensitivity to gluten, and occurs by genetically predisposed individuals. It is an autoimmune disease which recently presents one of the most common chronic digestive tract diseases by children, and is actually very hard to be defined. The only known treatment is sticking to a strict lifelong gluten-free diet. In the diploma work, we have presented the characteristics of celiac disease in children, the importance of the lifelong gluten-free diet, the role of a medical nurse for a child who has celiac disease; the legislation and Slovene celiac society. We used descriptive method. Based on the literature, sticking to the free-gluten diet affects a patient’s health positively even at the very begging of the diet – clinical occurrences dissipate eventually, diarrhoea in children with typical pathological symptoms disappears, and renewed growth occurs once again. The child's frame of mood also gets better, and the risk of long-term complications decreases. There have been some novelties in the field of legislation: the parents of a child with celiac disease can assert child benefit for child nursing, children are entitled to regenerative rehabilitation, the parents get a special tax relief, one of the parents who cares for a child and looks after him has the right to get at least three additional annual holiday days. Thus, by life-long diet discipline, a child with celiac disease can live an equally active life and achieve the same goals as children with no food restrictions.
