Title:SIMULATION OF PRODUCTION OF METHANE FROM SYNTHESIS GAS WITH ASPEN PLUS SOFTWARE
Abstract:Coal gasification technology is mainly used for synthetic gas production, which is a starting material for chemical, fuel and electricity generation. Due to high oil and gas prices the latest and most economical alternative to natural gas is methane gas production by means of coal gasification. Such a technique is used to produce synthetic gas that contains varying amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Since synthetic gas composition is, however, not suitable for the direct synthesis of methane, it is necessary to carry out the water gas shift reaction in order to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and hydrogen, using water vapour and a specific catalyst. The output gas mixture is then passed through catalytic methanation reactor to produce methane which can be further used as synthetic natural gas (SNG). With the process simulation software Aspen Plus® 2006.5, the final section of the BA thesis introduces the simulation of synthesis gas conversion based on steam hydrogasification, the selection of methanol absorbent to eliminate CO2 from this particular synthetic gas, and the simulation of methanation in synthetic natural gas production.
