Abstract:

Title:
CHROMIUM REMOVAL FROM LANDFILL LEACHATE BY COAGULATION AND ADSORPTION PROCESSES
Abstract:
Landfill leachates pose a threat for the environment, because they contain many organic and inorganic components, such as heavy metals. In order to find out the quality of leachate from the CERO Gajke Ptuj landfill, operational monitoring report for the year 2010 was examined. We found out that among parameters total chromium, COD and BOD5 exceed discharge limit values. Thus, appropriate treatment is needed for their removal from leachate. Two methods were chosen for the chromium reduction: coagulation with flocculation and adsorption processes on zeolites and chelating polymer. The tested coagulants were: FeCl3, Al2(SO4)3 and Al(OH)3, while anionic polyelectrolyte with trade name Magnafloc LT 25 was used as a flocculant. The laboratory tests were performed. Based on the physicochemical analysis of total chromium concentrations before and after the treatment the most appropriate method was assessed.
