Abstract:

Title:
FUNCTIONALIZATION CELLULOSE WITH HITOSAN AND ITS DERIVATIVES
Abstract:
Medical textiles are one of the fastest growing fields of technical textiles. This fast development can be attributed to several factors such as: population growth and age, life standard changes and increased awareness of healthy living and concern for health, as well as increase in contagious bacterial diseases and hospital infections etc. Several functionalization methods for acquiring antimicrobial qualities of textile materials are available. Most of these methods still employ reagents harmful to humans and the environment, and they include inorganic salts, phenols and thiophenols, antibiotics, formaldehyde etc. That is why the use of functionalization procedures, which use environmentally friendly and biodegradable reagents, such as amino polysaccharides and their derivatives with antibacterial qualities, has been increasing. At this time, the most commonly used is the amino polysaccharide chitosan. But despite of its common and widely spread use it shows certain drawbacks, especially limited solubility and, consequently, antimicrobial activity only in an acidic medium. A broad spectrum of derivatives can be gained from chitosan by using chemical modifications with the purpose of improving its characteristics. The purpose of this thesis is to carry out a comparison between the commercial chitosan (primary amino groups) and its derivatives (chitosan with quaternary ammonia compounds) regarding potential use of chitosan as an adsorbate for fuctionalization of textile surfaces. We performed procedures of chitosan adsorption from a liquid medium to the cellulose surface. The physical-chemical (determining the functional group of the fibres) and antimicrobial properties of functionalized cellulose fibres have been characterised. We concluded that quaternary chitosan, if compared to the commercial chitosan (amino groups), adsorbs a larger quantity on the fibre surface and has a higher content of available amino groups and consequently better antimicrobial effects.
