Abstract:POVZETEK Teoretična izhodišča: Kronična bolezen spremeni otrokov način življenja in njegove navade ter postavi otroku različne omejitve. Posledično otrok postane odvisen od staršev in medicinskega osebja.

Title:The role of the family in children with chronic disease
Abstract:ABSTRACT Theoretical starting-point: Chronic illness changes child’s way of life and his habits, sets him some kind of limits and makes him dependent on his parents and medical staff. Most children become less independent; dependence on others is increased, fear and uncertainty appear. Prime reaction at confirmation of chronic illness diagnosis is shock and denial, then parents confront with illness and help their child the most. Each family with child who suffers from chronic illness changes its way of life, so that it is the most suitable and useful for their child. Purpose: Main purpose of my diploma paper is presenting the family role with a child who has confirmed chronic illness diagnosis. With our research we wanted to find out if life of the family with chronic ill child changes and in what way. Methods: In my diploma paper we used descriptive work method. Theoretical starting-points were represented by national and foreign literature. We used anonymous questionnaire for collecting data. In our research collaborated 25 parents with chronic ill children that were treated by preschool clinic and children’s and youth’s clinic in Velenje. Results and discussion: Data that were acquired with our research show that in most cases every family changes its way of life when the diagnosis is confirmed. We also found out that the family role with chronic ill child is very important, because child in a family where parents stay by his side feels safe and capable of handling his disease. The research shows that the whole family frequently changes eating habits and spend some quality time with their chronic ill child.
