Abstract:

Title:
PATIENT WITH VENOUS THROMBOSIS
Abstract:
The present thesis comprises two sections. In the first section we review risk factors, diagnostic and therapeutic management, and prevention of deep venous thrombosis. Furthermore we introduce the concept of outpatient management ("day hospital") of venous thrombosis with emphasis on the role of nurses as pivotal healthcare professionals in the management of patients with venous thrombosis, especially in the aspects of management that deal with patient education and coping with the disease. The second section summarizes the results of an original empirical investigation that was carried out among patients attending The Anticoagulation Clinic at the University Medical Center in Ljubljana in September 2010. Our findings suggest that male patients are on average younger than female patients, although the age difference is minimal. Moreover, level of education was significantly higher in men (the majority of male patients had graduate level education vs. elementary and grammar level that was predominant in women). Additionally, we found that patients' understanding of the disease was poor: only one half of the patient population could recall which risk factors have yielded to their disease, and some were unable to name any risk factors associated with venous thrombosis. On the other hand, the majority of our study population expressed good knowledge about the treatment of venous thrombosis, although they lacked specific knowledge about other aspects of management, such as compression stockings and recommended physical activity.
