Abstract:V diplomskem delu sta predstavljena oba v slovenščino prevedena romana madžarskega dobitnika Nobelove nagrade Imreja Kertésza: Brezusodnost (1975) in Kadiš za nerojenega otroka (1990).

Title:THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY IN IMRE KERTÉSZ'S FATELESS AND KADDISH FOR A CHILD NOT BORN
Abstract:This diploma paper presents two into Slovene translated novels by the Hungarian Nobel price winner Imre Kertész: Fateless (1975) and Kaddish for a Child Not Born (1990). Both works correlate to the obscure times of the 20th century marked by the holocaust, this is the reason why this diploma paper shortly illuminates this historical background. The main emphasis in the diploma paper lies on the question of identity. The focus is on the individual identity of the persona being thrown into the concentration camp, where this individual cannot appear as the subject, because of the degradation of the humanity and the prevention of liberal activity. The identity of the individual therefore interweaves with the identity of the group. Another central topic is the religious – Jewish – identity and the difficulties a persona faces identifying oneself as a member of a religion one does not understand, know and therefore cannot embrace as one’s own. For this reason the distinctions between the cultural and national identity needed to be set. In the final part the relationship between faith and freedom is presented as experienced and seen by the characters in both novels.
