Title:Women's self-esteem after breast surgery
Abstract:Theoretical introduction: Self-esteem is a set of concepts and performances that we have about ourselves. It consists of a number of areas in which one is body image. Breast disease is often accompanied by an invasive form of treatment or surgery. Thus, beside the fear of the disease outcome, women are also accompanied by the fear of a changed physical appearance, which affects on her self-esteem. Aim: The study was to determine the influence of surgery on self-esteem of women with malignant and benign breast changes. Methods: A questionnaire was developed and used for the given purpose. The study included 78 women, who had a breast surgery in the operating block of the Department of Gynaecology and Perinatology of the University Medical Centre Maribor, from October to December 2009. Results: Data that were obtained at the completion of our research show, that there is an outstanding change in women's self-esteem after a major surgery, which includes the removal of entire breast with or without removal of the lymph nodes. After such surgery 50 % of women answered that they have a changed self-esteem. By a minor breast surgery only 6 % of interviewed women gave such answer. Conclusion: The survey results show that the modified self-image in surgeries depends on the extent of surgery or of a change in body image after a surgery.
