Title:Factors affecting attendance levels in choirs at different stages of life
Abstract:The master’s thesis examines the factors influencing choir attendance at different stages of life. Choirs represent an important activity for the development of singing abilities while also offering numerous other benefits, such as psychological, physical, social, musical, and educational. Despite the rich traditions of choirs in Slovenia, many individuals choose not to participate in them, and the reasons for this vary. To this end, the theoretical part of the master’s thesis provides a detailed review of the development of singing, singing in choirs, presents some successful choirs in Slovenia, and focuses on the factors influencing choir attendance in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The empirical part is based on a survey administered to 86 individuals from purposefully selected choirs in Slovenia. The results revealed that the factor ‘’joy of singing’’ is the most common reason for attending a choir from elementary school to adulthood, while the ‘’opportunity to perform’’ is most prominent in kindergarten. Additionally, gender, age, and musical education were found to be statistically significantly associated with the factors influencing choir attendance across different stages of life. General education was also statistically significantly associated with the factors during the college attendance period. Differences in factors were also observed between amateur and established choirs.
