Abstract:

Title:
Crisis situations in the Red Sea and their impacts on ports
Abstract:
The emergence of crisis situations in the Red Sea has had a major impact on maritime transport. Armed Houthi attacks on cargo ships have been causing major financial losses to the world's shipping companies since November 2023. Due to intensified and repeated attacks, they decide to avoid the waterway across the Red Sea, which is one of the most important sea routes, until further notice. However, the diversion of ships from the Red Sea south around the Cape of Africa means a journey of more than ten days and, as a result, disrupted and difficult port activities. The problem of crisis situations in the Red Sea and their impact on ports was gradually addressed. First, through the theoretical starting points through which we identified the geostrategic frameworks of the waterways that are important for global maritime transport and the changes in those that occur due to the armed attacks of the Houthis. The research methodology followed a combination of methods, including observation and comparative analysis, for a comprehensive understanding of the operation of ports in crisis situations. The results showed that piracy increases delays and diversions of shipping vessels, and consequently creates uncertainty about the delivery of cargo to ports. However, we have also found that pirate attacks on cargo ships have much wider implications, as they affect various aspects of the international community.
