Title:The importance of the psychological preparation of competitive dancers and the role of the coach in this process
Abstract:In my diploma thesis I investigated the role a coach plays in the psychological preparation of competitive dancers. The aim of the thesis was to present and explore the role of the coach in the psychological preparation of dancers and to examine the importance of regularly incorporating different psychological techniques into the training plan. The diploma thesis also aimed to explore the psychological approaches that coaches use in their work with dancers and the techniques that can help to improve dancers' competitive performance and take the pressure off them. I involved dancers and their coaches in my diploma thesis and used a questionnaire to investigate how much effort coaches put into the psychological preparation of the dancers they train and how dancers rate their own psychological readiness for competitions. The results showed that most coaches in Slovenia pay more attention to the physical preparation than to the psychological preparation of their dancers. Nevertheless, most coaches use relaxation techniques when working with dancers to reduce the anxiety associated with competitions. For my thesis, I consulted both local and foreign literature. I was able to discuss the topic at length with fellow dance coaches and dancers, but I also found that my own knowledge and 17 years of experience in dance, first as a dance competitor and later as a dance coach, were very helpful.
