Abstract:V drugem desetletju 21. stoletja so glasbeni festivali doživeli velik vzpon. Zanima nas njegov razvoj in oblikovanje programske zasnove.

Title:The evolution of a festival: Reconsidering the program of the MENT Ljubljana festival
Abstract:In the second decade of the 21st century, music festivals have grown immensely. The types of festivals gaining more recognition in terms of popularity are showcase festivals, as such events are not made only for the entertainment of the crowd, but also for the musicians to introduce themselves to the public. Amongst them is MENT Ljubljana, a festival which we examine in our thesis. More precisely, we are interested in its growth and the development of the program. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we introduce the basics of event management with an emphasis on the planning process, and festivals as a subgenre of events, where we focus on music festivals. Moreover, theoretical findings on creating the festival program plan are also presented, through which we gain an insight into the entire planning process. In the empirical part of the research, we first present the development of the MENT festival from 2015 to 2021 – when the festival has been carried out for the 7th time. The following research consists of proposals for possible upgrades of the future MENT festivals. This was done by gathering and analyzing the answers of three groups of interviewees (organizers, performers, and visitors). The results showed us that the festival is well organized however, a potential for improvement arises. Our findings showed that visitors, in particular, wish to prolonge the festival by extending it for one day. The solution of gaining the same amount of performers as in 2020, or a smaller overlap of musicians and venues, is to move the performance of several smaller new bands to the first day of the festival. MENT is becoming more and more popular not only among musicians but also visitors. The distance between different concert locations presents a minor drawback, so we suggest a smaller number of concert venues and thus bringing the festival even closer to the audience.
