Title:Flea infestations in dogs
Abstract:Flea infestation is the most common parasitic disease in dogs. It is caused by 2-3 mm large wingless insects from the genus Siphonaptera that live within the coat of the host. They feed with hosts blood, causing him discomfort, itching and, in some cases, allergic skin inflammation. Since there is a lack of information on how systematically dog owners address this problem in Slovenia, the aim of present study was to determine the prevalence of fleas in dogs and the awareness of dog owners about the problem of fleas and the diseases transmitted by fleas. Data were collected by means of a survey of 99 dog owners and a clinical examination of 145 selected animals. The results of the survey showed that over 90 % of dog owners (n=92) use flea repellents, with only a third of them using them regularly. The majority of respondents possess only a dog (≈60 %), while the rest mostly also cats, which increases the risk for flea infection. The share of dogs living inside is 30 %, while the rest live only outside (32 %) or mixed (38 %), which also increases the risk for flea infection. Most dog owners use flea ampoule or tablet remedies that they buy from a veterinarian and have no doubts about their side effects. Although only 46 % of dog owners who eradicate fleas know that the dog transmits also canine tapeworm (for which human is an intermediate host), 77 % also suppress internal parasites. The share of owners, who systematically eradicates fleas is only 33 %, the majority of them uses repellents only seasonally, regardless of the fact whether they live with the dog or not. The observed prevalence of flea infestation is relatively low (12 %) and comparable to other European countries. Based on the results of the thesis, we can conclude that dog owners should be more intensively informed about the problematic of flea infestation and the importance of systematic flea control.
