Abstract:

Title:
Opioids overdose, recognition, treatment and role of paramedics in prehospital environment
Abstract:
Introduction: Opioid overdose can be a life-threatening condition where time and appropriate recognition of overdose is required, as well as proper response time to help or care. The purpose of this thesis is to determine how many rescuers or paramedics encountered opioid overdose and their role in the process. Methods: A descriptive method of working with literature review was used. Data were collected with survey questionnaires and processed using descriptive statistics. We used the SPSS software tool and Microsoft Office Excele 2015 for data processing. Results: The results of the study showed that most of the paramedics employed at the Emergency Medical Service had had met with a person overdosed on opioids. The most common opioid encoutered by rescuers is heroin, which is still the biggest problem among illicit drugs. However, a few other opioids have also been reported. Discussion and conclusion: Our data showed that a number of serious complicatioins occur with opioid overdose. Therefore, the role of rescuers in the field is essential when it comes to such interventions. Of great importance is the use of the antidote naloxone, to antagonise opioids effect and prevent further complications.
