Abstract:

Title:
Multiculturalism in elementary school: case study and teachers' poin of view
Abstract:
Modern societies are multicultural, which can be attributed to the influences of globalization, which manifest themselves as mass migrations. The increase in the number of migrants in the EU has been reflected in public pressure following the tightening of migration and integration policies. The purpose of the master's thesis was to examine the attitudes of students towards multiculturalism and to determine whether the attitudes and the presence of stereotypes can be influenced by conducting pedagogical workshops. What were examined were the attitudes of teachers towards multiculturalism, which pedagogical methods they use and assess as effective in addressing the topic of multiculturalism. We used a case study method conducted in the 4th grade at one primary school in the Podravska region (N = 46) and an online survey to check the attitudes of teachers (N = 181). The case study showed that students have a positive perception of multiculturalism and equally express stereotypes towards immigrants. After the implementation of pedagogical workshops, the attitudes of children changed positively, the expression of stereotypes decreased. Teachers have positive attitudes towards multiculturalism, they are most expressed among teachers of social sciences, who most often deal with the topic of multiculturalism. The most negative attitudes are expressed by science teachers. The most effective methods used by teachers are interviewing and film screenings. The results of the research are not representative, but we can make some recommendations for teachers based on the findings derived from a specific sample.
