Abstract:Rimska vojska, ki je Ilire prvič napadla leta 229 pr.n.št., najprej ni uresničevala imperialističnih želja rimske države.
Keywords:Imperializem, Dalmacija, Istra, pirati, romanizacija, pravična vojna, Hrvaška.

Title:Roman conquest of the present-day Croatian coast and the question of Roman imperialism
Abstract:The Roman army, which first invaded the Illyrians in 229 BC, initially failed to realize the imperialist ambitions of the Roman state. Ancient writers and modern authors have cited various reasons for Roman interventions on the eastern Adriatic coast, yet none of them stated that the Roman state had intentions to conquer this territory before Augustus. Prior to the era of Augustus, Roman army carried out attacks, which some ancient writers also characterised as part of a just war, as the Romans had previously suffered damage from the Illyrians. However, by no means were these previous attacks a planned conquest of territory, that is, imperialism. In the course of their invasion of the area, the Romans carried out Romanization, which was noticeable in many areas.
Keywords:Imperialism, Dalmatia, Istria, pirates, Romanization, just war, Croatia.
