Abstract:

Title:
Romans and Germanic peoples between war and peace: a history of troubled relationships
Abstract:
The first chapter covers the way Germanic tribes lived. The Germanic association with Rome is also described. Following in the same chapter are the subchapters on the recruitment of the Germans into the Roman army and the exposure of the opinions of some Roman writers on the Germans. This is followed by descriptions of selected military interactions between Rome and the Germans, which are equipped with the views of the Roman writers. Initially, the first direct Roman-German contact, the fighting of the Cimbri and the Teutons with the Roman army, is described. The description covers Roman defeats and the final victory of Rome between 113 and 101 BC. This is succeeded by a description of Caesar's war with the Germans between 58 and 51 BC, as this represents the arrival of Rome into the immediate vicinity of the Germans and the first Roman invasion of the Germanic territory. This is followed by the period of Emperor Augustus, his quest for the conquest of Germania and the defeat in the forest of Teutoburg, which put an end to this conquest. The sequel represents the revolt of the Batavi between 69 and 70 AD. This revolt is related to the description of Domitian's expedition against the Chatti between 82 and 83 AD. The last chapter describes the Marcomannic wars between 166 and 180 BC and the subjugation of the Marcomanni and their allies.
