Abstract:Stališča do iskanja strokovne psihološke pomoči, pismenost o duševnem zdravju in stigmatizacija duševnih motenj so področja, ki so v Sloveniji pomanjkljivo raziskana.

Title:Attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help in association with mental health literacy and stigmatisation of mental disorders among students in Slovenia
Abstract:The attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help, mental health literacy and stigmatisation of mental disorders are insufficiently researched areas in Slovenia. We were, however, interested in Slovenian student population and have thoroughly examined the factors of attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help, its connection to mental health literacy, stigmatisation of mental disorders and attitudes towards depression and suicide. The sample of participants included 331 students of different student programmes. Data was collected by using several measures. We have found that the majority of students display accepting attitudes towards seeking psychological help, which positively correlate with mental health literacy and accepting attitudes towards depression. Accepting attitudes towards seeking psychological help also positively correlate with age. Accepting attitudes are negatively associated with stigmatisation, while the correlation with attitudes towards suicide did not reach the level of statistical significance. The results also show that the students of medicine and psychology are more open-minded towards professional forms of help than the students of other programmes. The same applies for students who are more familiar with different sources of help, for students who have better access to these sources and for those who sought psychological help in the past. The study offers an interesting insight into understanding the different attitudes towards mental health among the young adults and can be a great starting point for further research of this area.
