Title:Life abroad: Comparison of some aspects of mental health and life satisfaction of Slovenes living in Germany and Slovenes living in Slovenia
Abstract:The purpose of the graduation thesis is to examine and compare some aspects of mental health and satisfaction with life among Slovenian emigrants in Germany and Slovenians living in Slovenia. 390 participants took the survey, 214 were Slovenian emigrants to Germany and 176 were Slovenians living in Slovenia. They were all aged between 20 and 74. The questionnaire filled out by the participants consisted of a Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Zung-self rating depression scale (SDS) and satisfaction with life scale (SWLS). Statistical analysis showed that there are statistically important differences in anxiety in connection with emigration. A higher level of anxiety was shown by Slovenians living in Slovenia which is not in line with our presumption. There are no statistically relevant differences between expressing depression and satisfaction with life. Furthermore, the frequency of contacts among Slovenians living in Germany, affiliation in Slovenian associations in Germany and participating in Slovenian events in Germany also showed no statistically important differences. There were also no statistically important differences in the items examining mental health and satisfaction with life among Slovenians living in Germany where the knowledge of German was in question but there was higher satisfaction with life; the results were lower on the anxiety and depression scale among those who evaluated their knowledge of German on C1 level.
