Abstract:Teoretično izhodišče: Aplikacija zdravil predstavlja najzahtevnejšo kompetenco medicinskih sester, zato je pomembno, da imajo ustrezne numerične veščine in sposobnosti za računanje odmerkov zdravil. Rezultati: V povprečju so študenti računski del anketnega vprašalnika rešili s 74,1 % uspešnostjo, kar predstavlja so oceno zadostno (6). Pomanjkljivo znanje numeričnih veščin in računanja odmerkov zdravil predstavlja novo raziskovalno področje z namenom izboljšati in odpraviti težave v izobraževanju in izboljšati kakovost zdravstvene nege.

Title:Numerical skills and drug calculation abilities of nursing students
Abstract:Theoretical background: Medication administration represents the toughest competence of a nurse, for which the numerical skills are necessary to perform safe dosage calculation. Numerical skills are fundamental for nursing students, because with the lack of knowledge, medication administration errors can occur at the clinical training. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of numerical skills and drug calculation abilities of nursing students. Research methods: The diploma thesis is based on quantitative research design. Survey method was used to collect the data. We used a convenience research sample of nursing students (n = 242). Data analysis and results presentation was carried out with the use of descriptive statistics method. Results: The median achieved score of all students was 74,1 %. The median achieved score of numerical skill test was 83,0 % and 38,8 % in dosage calculation test. The most difficult for students to calculate was hourly flow infusion rate exercise. Nursing students argued that the main obsticle for their exact dosage calculation is doctors unreadeble handwriting. Discussion: Results have shown that students have sufficient knowledge of numerical skills, but there is a lack of knowledge in dosage calculation. These results are also confirmed by many authors, which all agree that numerical skills are fundamental for dosage calculation, because patients' safety can be threatened. Lack of knowledge of numerical skills and dosage calculation represents a new area of research, with goals to improve and to eliminate educational problems and to eventualy increase the quality of nursing care.
