Abstract:

Title:
Impact of animal-assisted interventions on children with autism spectrum disorder
Abstract:
Autism is a developmental disorder that is inherently incurable, but its symptoms can be managed and reduced to some degree. In this undergraduate thesis we introduce animal-assisted interventions, the impact they have on children with autism spectrum disorder, identify animals and their characteristics most fitting for children with autism spectrum disorder, and present certain reservations regarding the use of animal-assisted interventions on children with autism spectrum disorder. We have used descriptive and comparative methods and the following literature: professional and scientific articles, books, publications, proceedings, manuals and professional authentic internet sources in Slovene and foreign languages, written between 1991 and 2017. We have investigated the way in which animal-assisted interventions affect children with autism spectrum disorder. Our findings show that animal-assisted interventions result in increased social interaction, increased communication, improved mood and motor functions and reduced aggressive behavior. For optimal results we have to select the most appropriate form of intervention (therapy or activity) and animal for each individual child with autism spectrum disorder. Animal-assisted interventions are a good alternative, complementary and in principle harmless form of treatment for which medical personnel should show support.
