Abstract:

Title:
The impact od night and shift work on sleep disorders among nurses
Abstract:
Most nurses are assigned to shift or nightly work schedules. Only by enabling a 24-hour accessibility to these services, complete medical care is guaranteed. The consequence of such schedules is a non-consistent sleep schedule which can lead to sleep disorders. These can lead to risks such as the appearance of specific diseases and psycological disorders that can affect on the dynamics on social and family life and on the quality of work performance. Methods: A quantitative research methodology was used amongst 302 nurses, based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Some questions were added to the standardized questionnaire which covered areas like work forms, work schedules, health status, physical and psychic state, quality of work done and interpersonal relationships. Results: The study statistically indicates that sleeping disorders (p = 0,0005) are more common amongst nurses who are required to work in shift or night schedules. Additionally, some differences were identified in the development of psychic and organic diseases, the quality of work done and worse interpersonal relationship when amongst staff that work on fixed schedules. Conclusion: Nurses that are assigned to night and shift workings schedules are particularly vulnerable to the development of specific diseases. The duty of the employer and every employee is to limit the risk factors by watching over his or her health, primarily arriving on shifts well rested.
