Title:Self-Image of patients with intestinal stoma
Abstract:In the paper I approach the patients with intestinal stoma with a focus on his or her self-image. Once the patient is diagnosed with symptoms of disease or injury, resulting in the intestinal stoma, his or her life can change radically. The latter, however, could be specified as surgical operation of the healthy part of small or large intestine outside of the abdominal wall or skin. After the operation the patient's body changes. Since it is about the artifical way of excreting, this new way affects the self-image a lot. The body image disturbances are a determinant of the quality of life in ostomy patients during their rehabilitation process, therefore it is fundamental for the nurses to take good care of those patients, who are confronting many fears, who are in distress, and require continuous support, for their problems are long-lasting. Therefore, the nurse should always be at the patient's disposal, give him or her the encouragement on how to designate the everyday life activities, such as self-care, nutrition, pysical activities and potential complications. Moreover, the nurse should advise and create the system to acknowledge, organize and make the necessary changes. The life of the ostomy patient could remain to be of a good quality. It is thus crucial for the patient to accept and adjust to his or her new way of life and learn the facts about the intestinal stoma, which can enable him or her to live their lives fully in the long run.
