Abstract:Na Slovenskem imajo Gulliverjeva potovanja že skoraj stoletno zgodovino: prvič so izšla 1894 v sentimentalni večerniški priredbi Vinka Bregarja z naslovom Potovanje v Liliput.

Title:Gulliver's Travels in Izidor Cankar's translation
Abstract:The subject of this paper is the Slovene translation of Gulliver's Travels by Izidor Cankar, first published in 1951; reprinted in 1967 and 1986. Since it represents the only complete version of Swift's text in Slovene, its impact on the readership cannot be underestimated. The tradition of Gulliver in Slovenia extend over a century, and it comprises 18 different versions; 17 of them are adaptations for children. As a consequence, Gulliver features predominantly as a fairy tale hero. The variety of the texts signifies that the book has established a certain modus vivendi of its own. The common notion of Gulliver has been further influenced by the fact that Cankar provided his own adaption in 1953 - a fact that of course highlights the translator's attitude to the original. Consequently, the main part of this paper consists of examples which illustrate the changes that the original underwent in the target language. The discussion concentrates on the evoked stylistic effects, or, rather, miseffects, and particularly on the modified reader's response.
