Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava prisotnost tekmovalnosti v šolskem okolju.

Title:Individual aspects of competitiveness in elementary school from teachers' and students' perspective
Abstract:This Master’s Thesis discusses the presence of competitiveness in the school environment. The theoretical part investigates competitiveness in relation to social change, domestic factors, and political and economic expectations, which are reflected in the educational process and impact the comprehension and content of the professional discourse about competitive behaviour. This is also reflected in the beliefs and pedagogical actions of teachers. The empirical part introduces the results of the survey, conducted on a sample of 191 students and 64 teachers. The main objective of the study was finding out to what extent competitiveness about the teacher’s affection and grades as well as peer competitiveness were present in the classroom. The study aimed to establish whether teachers used competitive practices often. In addition, it also focused on the teachers’ opinions on competitiveness, and whether their grades were in accordance with the students’ perception. The differences in the answers of students were analysed according to gender, grade, and academic achievement; while the answers of teachers were analysed considering their years of service and the subject they teach. The results show that competitiveness between students is most present in sports; boys show a higher level of competitiveness here, whereas girls are more competitive in arts. The biggest agreement with the statements was present in statements, which were connected to competitiveness about school grades and achievements. Girls, and academically more successful students proved to put greater importance on good grades. The students of the 6th grade showed a greater tendency towards competitiveness about the teacher’s attention in comparison to the students of the 8th grade. This was mirrored during class where the 6th graders were more active, and had a greater wish to prove themselves. The results show that teachers (according to their own statements) rarely or only occasionally use practices which would encourage competitiveness among students. After evaluating the opinions of teachers towards competitiveness and its consequences the situation is still fairly unclear. Teachers mainly have a negative opinion on competitiveness, especially encouraging peer competitiveness; however, they have a more positive opinion on students’ self-competition.
