Abstract:

Title:
THE CONCEPTION OF THE SOUL IN WORKS OF PLATO, ARISTOTLE, ORIGEN AND THOMAS AQUINAS
Abstract:
Definition of the soul and its relationship with the body is one of those never answered questions of humankind. In the past the question occupied philosophers and theologians. In the present, cognitive science is especially focused on it. In the thesis we focused on the four great thinkers of the past. We reviewed the concept of the soul in Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Origen. The purpose of the thesis was to examine their concepts and find possible common points and differences in their definitions of the soul. We wanted to determine whether there is a causal link between Plato's and Origen's understanding of the soul, as well as whether there is a causal link between Aristotle's and Aquinas’s. We determined that there are certain similarities, but Origen's conception of the soul is not build on the basis of Plato. Despite of certain similarities there are many important differences between them. Thomas Aquinas certainly derived from Aristotle and supplemented the concept in accordance with Christian teachings. We used descriptive, historical and comparative method and the method of analysis and abstraction. We resorted to primary and secondary sources.
