Title:THE MUNICIPALITY OF SVETA ANA DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION
Abstract:This master's thesis describes the developments in the Municipality of Sveta Ana during the German occupation in the years 1941–1945. Before the Second World War, the Municipality of Sveta Ana belonged to the district of Maribor – left bank, and was a typical rural community where the main branch of economy was agriculture. The purpose of this thesis is to present the events in the municipality before the war and the reasons which led to the development of operations by the German cultural association (“Kulturbund”), and consequently a friendly reception of Germans by some of the inhabitants at the beginning of the war. Moreover, the thesis presents the German occupation system in the case of the Municipality of Sveta Ana and describes the resistance to the occupying forces. The initial enthusiasm for the Germans began to decline when they started to introduce the denationalisation measures in this area, as elsewhere. There were not many conditions to fight the occupier present at the time. The resistance was put up by the partisans, who only started coming to the area of Sveta Ana as activists of the Liberation Front in the years 1943/44, of the one part, and chetniks, who were recruiting the eventual followers in this part of Slovenske gorice, of the other part. The latter also succeeded in attracting some new supporters. Towards the end of the Second World War, German soldiers started to retreat through the territory of the Municipality of Sveta Ana towards Austria and the war was over on 9 May 1945 with the arrival of activists of the Liberation Front to the mentioned territory. The respective work also addresses the lists of victims of the Second World War, which was updated accordingly.
Keywords:Lower Styria, Sveta Ana, Kulturbund, German occupation, partisans, chetniks, victims of the Second World War.
