Title:MOTIVATION FOR READING LITERATURE
Abstract:The aim of our thesis entitled Motivation for reading literature is to determine whether the fourth grade students of I. OŠ Žalec have all three dimensions of motivation for reading literature: self- efficacy in reading, internal and external motivation and social reading. We were also interested in the correlation between the presence or the absence of each dimension of motivation for reading literature and the students’ performance in the literary reading as estimated by their teacher. In the theoretical part of the thesis, motivation in general and the four approaches to motivation are defined on the basis of scientific and professional literature. Since the thesis is about reading motivation, the reading itself, the reading techniques, the reasons for reading, the reading development and the reading models are defined. The motivation for reading, internal and external, is also precisely defined, as well as all three dimensions of motivation for reading. Furthermore, the thesis discusses the influence of the domestic environment and schools on the reading motivation and different ways on how to develop it. In the empirical part of the thesis, the questionnaire, which was submitted by a total of 39 fourth grade students of I. OŠ Žalec, was used as a research instrument. It was found that all three dimensions of motivation for reading literature were present with fourth grade students. There was also a connection between these dimensions and the students’ performance in literary reading as estimated by their teacher.
