Abstract:

Title:
The impact of world wide web on the development of English vocabulary
Abstract:
This diploma deals with the relation between the development of the language and the Internet. It has two parts. In the theoretical part, basic terminology is discussed. The aims of the survey, research questions and hypotheses present the start of the empirical part. In the next stage of the survey, all the words from the research sample were searched by Google and Yahoo to see how frequently they appear on-line. We continued by researching the relation between the development of Netspeak and word-formation processes. The main objective of our work was to see how Netspeak is developing and how is this development influenced by the society. In the conclusion the conclusions are written. We found that Netspeak and Standard English co-exist on-line. Time and the intention of the speaker are two reasons which decide which “language” (Netspeak or Standard English) the speaker is going to use. The main conclusion is that the development of Netspeak is making words shorter and by making them shorter the meaning is also, sometimes, made ambigious.
