Title:COLIC IN HORSES
Abstract:The aim of our research work was to determine the frequency of the occurrence of colic in our largest stud, in Kobilarna Lipica. The frequency rate of colic was compared to that of other horse diseases in the mentioned stud. To compare the frequency of colic in Kobilarna Lipica with the frequency of its occurrence elsewhere we used the frequency rate of colic in Državna Ergela Đakovo, where they also keep Lippizaner horses. Colic is an acute, repetitive convulsive stomach-ache caused mainly by smooth muscle contractions in the alimentary canal, by abnormalities in other abdominal organs and severe physical injuries. Colic is still the number one cause of death in horses; it can strike any horse regardless of its age, gender or breed. The purpose of this thesis was to introduce the symptoms of colic, for only through recognizing these symptoms on time we can assure a quicker and more successful medical treatment. We established that in Kobilarna Lipica colic is the third most common disease, for in the 5 year observation period, between the years 2004 and 2008, the percentage of colic in comparison to other diseases present in the mentioned stud added up to 15,36%. Kaneene and co-workers, (1997); Tinker co-workers, (1997b); Traub-Dargatz co-workers, (2001); Hillyer and co-workers, (2001), (quoted after Archer D. C. and Proudman C. J. (2006) found out that colic breaks out 3.5 till 10.6-times per 100 horses annually. The mortality rate due to colic varies between 6.7 and 15.6%. In Kobilarna Lipica colic breaks out 13.3-times and in Državna Ergela Đakovo 13.6-times per 100 horses annually. Besides, it was established that changes in air temperature and air humidity affect the frequency of occurrence of colic.
