Abstract:

TRANSLATING COLLOQUIAL LANGUAGE IN THE NOVEL GIRLS IN TEARS
Abstract:
Literary translation is one of the most complex forms of intercultural communication, which enables the transfer of literature into other languages and cultures. Above all, translating colloquial language is very demanding. The novel Girls in Tears is written by the British author Jacqueline Wilson. This work received two important literary awards and was adapted for a television series. It tells a story of three girls, who experience many ups and downs during which they shed tears. The author writes about serious problems in an amusing, yet by no means unserious, way and is therefore justifiably at the peak of popularity among young readers as well as experts in contemporary children’s literature. In my study, I focus on translating children’s literature and colloquial language. This variety of language displays different characteristics such as simplified grammar and phonology and a distinct vocabulary. Several of these features are visible in the novel, mainly in the dialogue, where Colloquial English can be distinguished from Standard English at first sight. I focus on the vocabulary, specifically on translating colloquial words and phrases as well as idioms. In translating colloquial language, different strategies are possible; however, some features get lost during the translation process.
