Abstract:POVZETEK Vsak narod ima svoje različice pregovorov. Pregovori, reki in druge izjave povezane s človeško naravo, delom, vremenom, navadami in verovanju uravnavajo življenje preprostega človeka. Taki pregovori imajo popolnoma drugačen pomen in opisujejo izkušnje ljudi. Vremenski pojavi so uporabljeni le simbolno. V prvem delu diplomskega dela je napisana metodologija. Nato sledi odgovor na vprašanje, kaj pregovori in reki sploh so. Sledi del, kjer so našteti različni pregovori in reki povezani z vremenom.

Title:ENGLISH WEATHER PROVERBS AND THEIR SLOVENE EQUIVALENTS
Abstract:SUMMARY Every country has its own version of well-known, well-tried proverbs. Both, English and Slovene are full of picturesque proverbs about the weather. Proverbs and sayings and other statements regarding human nature, work, weather, customs and faith often regulate the life of a simple man. They can be found in all cultures. Many of these thoughts have been with us for centuries and it is for many that we do not know where they came from and who brought them. In our everyday speech, the proverbs blend into the conversation and are often not even noticed. We can say that they put the spice into our conversations. At first they were probably meant as warnings, clever phrases, but having been used throughout the centuries, they have gathered more than just wisdom. Nowadays, there is a lot of humour in many of them. In my paper, some of the most common English weather proverbs and sayings are gathered. May it be those which are literally related to weather, or those in which the elements of weather are used to describe people’s experience, and are not related to weather at all. I have tried to find their Slovene equivalents, but unfortunately this was not possible for all the proverbs listed. In the first part of my paper, I have explained how I listed the proverbs and sayings and where I found them. Next, I have answered the question what proverbs and sayings are in the first place and what is the difference between them. Then I have provided some examples of English weather proverbs and sayings. Where possible the proverb or saying has an explanation, which is followed by its origin, an example sentence and the Slovene version. However, I have found out that there exist some English proverbs that do not have a Slovene equivalent and this fact I attribute to the differences in the climate. I have also provided some English weather proverbs related to the animals and some Slovene calendar weather proverbs.
