Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava vključevanje geografskih informacijskih sistemov (GIS) v osnovnošolski pouk geografije.

Title:QGIS in primary education : a case study of a geography lesson
Abstract:This master’s thesis explores the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into primary school geography lessons. The research examines how the open-source software QGIS can help students develop technical and analytical skills related to spatial data processing. Through two workshops and one lesson, students learn the basic functionalities of QGIS and create thematic maps, which are used to analyze geographic phenomena such as relief, water systems, land use, and climate. The research is based on a pedagogical experiment, employing methods such as QGIS observation, product analysis, and surveys. The results show that QGIS beneficially affects student motivation and promotes a deeper understanding of geographic content. Students successfully created maps; however, their speed and confidence differed due to the varying prior digital knowledge levels. The workshops also highlighted the need for additional time to interpret maps and connect technical skills with geographic understanding. The study offers guidelines for including GIS in the primary school curriculum, which may contribute to modernizing geography education, reinforce students’ spatial thinking, and strengthen digital competencies. Thus, it represents an important step towards a more practical and research-based approach to learning.
