Abstract:Doktorska disertacija obravnava prekmurski jezik v rokopisnih pridigah Jožefa Horvata, črenšovskega kaplana (1905–1912) in martjanskega župnika (1912–1932). Raziskava temelji na kombinaciji jezikoslovnih in zgodovinskih metod, vključuje analizo pisnih virov, terensko zbiranje podatkov, diplomatični prepis rokopisnih pridig in njihovo jezikovno analizo.

Title:Linguistic characteristics of the manuscript sermons of Jožef Horvat
Abstract:The doctoral thesis examines the use of Prekmurje Slovene in the manuscript sermons of Jožef Horvat, chaplain of Črenšovci (1905–1912) and parish priest of Martjanci (1912–1932). It includes in-depth linguistic analysis that incorporates previous research by the author and offers new findings on the language used by Horvat, thus representing a significant contribution to research on the religious literature of Prekmurje and the history of the language. The research is based on a combination of linguistic and historical methods including analysis of written sources, collection of data in the field, diplomatic transcription of the manuscript sermons and linguistic analysis of the sermons. The theoretical starting points of the thesis lie in research on the history of Prekmurje Slovene, ecclesiastical history and the development of standard Slovene. The research problem relates to the study of linguistic characteristics, historical influences and Horvat’s role in the development of standard Prekmurje Slovene. The main aim of the thesis is an analysis of Prekmurje Slovene in the manuscript sermons of Jožef Horvat at the orthographic, phonological, morphological, syntactic-stylistic and lexical levels. Another important aim is the preparation of a diplomatic transcription of the sermons for electronic publication. The central argument of the thesis is that standard Prekmurje Slovene gradually crossed over into dialectal contexts and moved closer to the unified Slovene literary norm. This gives rise to hypotheses about the formation and acceptance of a unified standard variety of Slovene in Prekmurje in the early twentieth century and the role played in this process by the language of preaching. One hypothesis relates to the fact that Horvat adopted three different linguistic concepts over the course of his almost three decades of activity in Prekmurje. The thesis presents significant findings on Prekmurje Slovene and its development in the context of religious preaching. It proves that, in a specific period, the sermon in Prekmurje Slovene was a literary genre that helped overcome linguistic differences between dialect and standard language and served as an effective means of resisting the Magyarisation of Prekmurje Slovenes.
