Abstract:	Kratice so postale nepogrešljiv del vsakdanjega življenja številnih ljudi. Pogosto se pojavljajo se v šalah na televiziji in radiu, kot učinkovito orodje v spletnih igrah, med delom, na spletnih omrežjih in drugod. Najbolj so se razširile v moderni dobi s hitrim razvojem komunikacijske tehnologije. Težave v komunikaciji nastopijo, kadar sogovorniki ne razpolagajo s skladnim znanjem, kar povzroča nesporazume. Do teh težav pogosto prihaja zaradi podvajanja kratic, saj se enake kratice pojavljajo v različnih strokovnih področjih in lahko pomenijo povsem različne stvari, odvisno od konteksta. Dodatna zapletenost nastane pri razumevanju kratic, ki izvirajo iz drugega jezika, zlasti pri starejših ljudeh, ki nimajo veliko stika z angleščino, a se prav tako pogosto srečujejo s takšnimi – bodisi zaradi uporabe sodobne tehnologije bodisi v komunikaciji z mlajšimi člani družine. Rezultati vprašalnika so pokazali, da mlajša generacija bolje razume večino pogosto uporabljenih kratic kot ostali skupini.

Title:	Commonly used english abbreviations and their understanding by different age groups in slovenia
Abstract:	Acronyms have become a part of everyday life for many people. They appear in jokes on television and radio, as a useful tool in online games, at work, on social media, etc. They are mostly spread in modern era with the quick developement of communication technology. The problem in communicaton arises when the participants don't share the same pool of information which might cause some misunderstandings. That can occure due to duplication of the acronyms across many different fields of study where they can mean something else depending on the context given. Trubles also arise when the acronyms come from a different language. This problem is more common with older people that don't have much interactions with English language, but they do come in contact with such acronmys beacause of technology or younger family members. The questionary has shown that the younger generation understands most of the commonly used acronmys better than the older two generations.
