Title:Wahhabist radicalism as the foundation of terrorism in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Abstract:The largest armed conflict in Europe since the Second World War was the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), which lasted from 1992 to 1995. In addition to Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks, volunteers from various countries fought on the side of Bosnian Muslims, most of them from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Iran. When the war ended, all foreign fighters had to leave the country, but to this day they have not done so. Together with some other Bosnians, they are spreading a radical form of Islam called Wahhabism. In certain areas of BiH, former fighters and some Bosniaks have set up their own organizations and communities where only Wahhabis live. Some members of Wahhabi communities have linked up with other members of radical Islam around the world to engage in terrorist and criminal activities. This thesis focuses on an ideology that seeks to model society on so-called original Islam. The terrorist threat in BiH is low, as no terrorist acts have been committed since 2016. Today, after the acceptance of Wahhabism in Bosnian society, many Muslims in BiH do not see any danger, nor do they understand the differences in the ritual and traditional performance of religious duties. The emergence of Wahhabism creates confusion among Muslims and mutual disagreements, but it is the greatest danger for the Islamic community in BiH. Wahhabism has a major impact on the emergence of civil strife and terrorism in BiH and on the emergence of fear among the population. We consider Wahhabism to be one of the potential sources of threat to the security of the population and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina itself.
