Title:Popularity of Slovenian and English among Primary School Students
Abstract:The master's thesis explores the popularity of Slovenian as the language of instruction and English as a foreign language among primary school students in the second and third educational phases, specifically focusing on fifth and ninth graders. The main objective of the research is to determine how the popularity of these two languages varies by age and gender of students, and to assess the impact of motivation on language learning and popularity. The theoretical part introduces contemporary theories on language acquisition, language learning motivation, and the characteristics of effective Slovenian and English teachers.. The study also addresses the use of teaching materials, resources, and technologies in language instruction, as well as how students encounter English in their free time. The empirical part includes data analysis obtained through surveys among fifth and ninth grade students. The findings indicate that fifth and ninth graders have differing attitudes towards both languages, with English being more popular among older students. External activities, such as media and technology, influence the popularity of language learning. The study reveals no gender differences in technology preference for learning English, whereas differences were observed for Slovenian: girls prefer using technology for learning Slovenian. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes several measures to enhance Slovenian language instruction, including the introduction of more interactive and modern teaching methods. Furthermore, it recommends further promoting exposure to English in students' daily lives, which positively impacts their motivation towards learning foreign languages. The master's thesis contributes to a better understanding of the factors influencing the learning of both languages.
