Title:Encouraging the Development of Students' Rhythmical Abilities in the 1st Grade of Primary School
Abstract:The Master’s thesis consists of the theoretical and empirical parts. The theoretical part addresses the expert findings in the field of musical (rhythmic) abilities: their development, the Gordon test of Primary Measures of Music Audiation (also used for measuring rhythmic abilities) and activities encouraging rhythmical development. The empirical part presents the research in which 16 first-grade students of a selected primary school participated. The research aimed to determine the development level of students’ rhythmical abilities before and after running music workshops, find whether initiated rhythmical activities contribute to better rhythmical abilities of students, and observe their reaction to the activities. We used the Gordon test of Primary Measures of Music Audiation to test the development level of rhythmic abilities before and after the workshops. Based on scientific knowledge to date, we planned and carried out ten music workshops with activities contributing to developing rhythmic abilities. When analysing the results, we found that students, on average, obtained somewhat better test results after workshops, yet the result was not statistically significant. We found no differences between the performance of boys and girls in any of the tests and that the two students who attended the preparatory music school performed worse than the other students in both cases. During the ongoing monitoring of the workshops, we noticed the students showed progress in their rhythmic abilities.
