Abstract:Bolniki v terminalni fazi najpogosteje poiščejo pomoč na urgenci zaradi neobvladljivih simptomov in različnih urgentnih stanj. Podatke smo zbrali s pomočjo ankete, ki so jo izpolnile diplomirane medicinske sestre in diplomirani zdravstveniki, zaposleni v urgentnih centrih v Sloveniji.

Title:Konwledge of emergency room nurses about palliative emergencies
Abstract:Patients in the terminal phase most frequently seek help in the emergency room because of uncontrollable symptoms and various emergencies. The aim of this paper is to present the common palliative care emergencies in the emergency department for patients with advanced non-communicable chronic diseases by nurses and to investigate the knowledge, frequency and management of palliative care emergencies in the emergency department. Methods: We used a quantitative methodology with a descriptive working method. The data were collected using a questionnaire filled out by registered nurses and certified health professionals working in emergency centres in Slovenia. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The results of the survey show that registered nurses in palliative care are frequently confronted with emergencies. They are also able to recognise emergencies and distinguish distressing symptoms from emergencies in patients with advanced terminal illness in palliative care. In this thesis, we investigated nurses' knowledge of palliative emergencies in the emergency department of patients with advanced incurable chronic diseases. We found that staff were able to recognise emergencies and distinguish them from bothersome symptoms. High-quality palliative care requires extensive specialist knowledge, most of which is acquired during studies, but which can be supplemented by additional specialist knowledge in palliative care. This is the only way to ensure a better quality of life for patients with advanced incurable chronic diseases.
