Title:Project Based Learning in Extended Stay by Organizing a STEM Area
Abstract:Extended stay is based in creativity and thus the choice to implement a STEM area as part of project-based learning was made. The main focus was to design and implement a STEM area where younger children could develop key competences in various areas of science, technology and engineering through practical activities. Project-based educational work was implemented in 4th grade at Primary School Franja Malgaja Šentjur. More than 16 students took part in this project that lasted ten sessions. From developing the initial idea to the final evaluation, students actively participated throughout all phases of the project. The concluding evaluation included my own observation alongside the opinion of both students and teachers. It showed that the emerging STEM area had a positive influence on the student’s motivation, on student collaboration, student engagement, and showed improvements in their understanding as well as the way the knowledge is obtained. Evaluation further showed that students developed critical thinking, showed significant improvements in their problem-solving skills and increased creativity. A STEM area has proven to be a valuable teaching tool that encourages student’s know-how, innovation, peer collaboration and contributes to a more dynamic and inclusive learning environment.
