Title:Illegal fishing and slavery on fishing boats
Abstract:In this thesis, we focused on the problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, which is one of the major threats to the oceans and to life in them today, as well as on the issue of forced labour and slavery on fishing boats. The world's growing population is also increasing the demand for (sea)food. As the demand for fish increases, the fishing industry is faced with the problem of supplying it. Overfishing is reducing fish stocks, which in turn makes it harder for fishermen to find areas rich in marine organisms. Increased demand also requires more work and more labour. The shortage of workers means that migrants and victims of human trafficking are trapped in forced labour at sea. Workers on ships are subjected to inhumane working conditions, without a rest, safe equipment, drinking water and food. They are also often victims of physical violence or even killed. As fishing boats engage in destructive fishing practices, they also catch non-target species of marine organisms that are later discarded, and these practices also destroy the seabed and marine habitat. The consequences of ocean degradation are felt not only by the animals in the ocean, but also by humans. The destruction of marine habitats and overfishing reduces the chance of life recovering there, which is experienced by humans as food shortages or starvation. The coastal countries in particular, which rely on fish for their livelihoods and income, are hit hard the most. With fewer catches, profits are also reduced, which is a big minus for the economy and the fishing industry. To maintain healthy oceans and human needs for seafood, we need to better inform and educate people, establish better and more effective controls on work at sea, and put in place laws to protect the oceans.
