Title:Work stress and dealing with stressful situations in healthcare
Abstract:Introduction: Stress is the body's response to pressure and can results in numerous changes in individual's body and behavior. In the workplace, stress occurs when the demands of the workplace exceed the capabilities of the employee, and the individual is no longer able to meet those demands. In healthcare, stress significantly affects the quality of life of employees and reduces the quality of medical care. Methods: In the theoretical part, we used the descriptive method of work. In the empirical part of the research, we surveyed employees at the internal and surgical department of one of the Slovenian hospitals. Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS 29.0 were used for data analysis and processing. The purpose of this research is to explore situations that cause stress among healthcare employees. The goals of this research are to determine which situations most commonly cause stress among healthcare employees and what the consequences are. Results: The research involved 14 healthcare employees of the internal department and 26 healthcare employees of the surgical department of one of the Slovenian hospitals. We found that insufficient number of employees (PV = 4.45) and overwork (PV = 4.13) are among the most common stressors reported by the participants. As the most frequent consequences of stress, they identify not enough time dedicated to physical exercise (PV = 1,95) and improper eating habits (PV = 2,08). Discussion and conclusion: Researching stressful situations in the healthcare workplace is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the problem and thereby increasing employee satisfaction, improving working conditions and ensuring optimal patient care.
