Abstract:Uvod: Zagotavljanje zadostnega števila kadra zdravstvene nege za doseganje optimalnih ciljev na urgenci zaradi naključnega prihoda pacientov, različnih stopenj nujnosti in potreb pacientov predstavlja poglaviten problem pri načrtovanju kadra. Razprava in sklep: V zaključnem delu smo pridobili dejanski vpogled v delovno obremenitev zaposlenih v zdravstveni negi v času raziskave.

Title:Nursing workforce planning in the Emergency Department
Abstract:Introduction: Providing enough nursing staff to achieve optimal goals in Emergency department because of random patient arrivals, their differing emergency status and their needs are the main problem in nursing workforce planning. Purpose of this research was to get an insight to the relation between workload and number of nursing staff in the chosen Emergency department. Methods: We used quantitative methodology for statistical analysis of numerical data for our prospective cohort research. Baseline Emergency Staffing Tool was used to calculate and analyze patient dependency on the nursing staff with the help of Jones Dependency Tool. We collected the data in a 14-day period in the month of October. Results: 32 participating nurses evaluated 405 patients for their dependency on the nursing staff. The average number of staff in the department was 0,4 lower than the number calculated. We calculated that the need for nursing staff is the greatest between 12:00 and 18:00 every day of the week. More than half (53 %) of all patients were evaluated as moderate dependency patients. Discussion and conclusion: With this research we got an insight into the real workload of the nursing staff at the time of evaluation. We contributed to understanding of workload and staffing needs at the chosen Emergency department and also opened the door for further research in this field.
